According to the European Commission, the number of people in the EU needing long-term care is projected to increase from 30.8 million in 2019 to 38.1 million by 2050. This trend is directly linked to population ageing and longer life expectancy.
Growing care needs will affect residential care, home care, healthcare services, municipalities and public finances. It is one of the key development issues of an ageing Europe.
For Slovenia, this topic is particularly important because population ageing affects not only health and social systems, but also families, local communities, labour markets and infrastructure planning.
The Institute for Demographic Future of Slovenia therefore monitors European data on ageing and long-term care as part of a broader understanding of Slovenia’s demographic future.
