The first step from concept to practice
The first implementation of the Demographic Youth Incubator marks an important milestone for the Institute for Demographic Future. The project is no longer only a development concept, but a programme already being carried out directly with young people.
The workshop in Celje was designed as an interactive space for reflection on the future, personal values, relationships, life choices and the wider social changes that will shape the generation of today’s young people.
Twenty-two third-year secondary school students took part in the workshop. The focus was not only on demographic data, but on how young people understand their future and what role they wish to have in a rapidly changing society.
Why this implementation matters
Slovenia is facing long-term demographic change: low fertility, population ageing, changing family patterns and new life priorities among younger generations. For that reason, the future should not be discussed only with decision-makers, but also with the generation that will live it.
The participants’ feedback was highly encouraging and confirmed the potential of the programme for further development across Slovenia. Young people are willing to discuss the future when they are offered a safe, respectful and inclusive space.
Next steps
In the coming months, the Institute aims to present the project to other schools, youth centres, municipalities and organisations that wish to offer young people a meaningful space to reflect on the future.
The Demographic Youth Incubator will continue to develop through new workshops, participant feedback and cooperation with local communities across Slovenia.
